Phone Addiction in Teenagers

Smartphones have become a major part of everyday life. Phones are designed to facilitate communication through calls and messages and to be highly convenient while doing so. However, too much phone usage and screen time can lead to addiction. In the last decade or so, researchers have noticed that phone addiction rates have gone tremendously up due to the release of social media apps like TikTok and Instagram. Many parents are concerned about their teenager’s health, relationships, and academic success.

Phone addiction is increasing because phones are getting more trendy. Almost 95% of teenagers own a smartphone. Only a small amount of their screen time is devoted to communication; the remainder is primarily spent on social media and other potentially harmful apps. Some even spend more than six hours a day on their phone, excluding schoolwork. Most teenagers don’t even realize that they spend so much time on their phones. It’s almost like a loophole; even when you try to break the habit, it comes back because it’s important daily.

When teenagers get chastised by their parents to get off their phones, they often overlook their frustration. Unfortunately, they do not understand the harm that they’re putting themselves through. Phone addiction has the following negative effects: mental health issues, success in school, troubled eyesight, etcetera. Students who spend an abundant amount of time on their phones are more likely to experience mental health struggles, lower grades, and bad eyesight in the future. Due to smartphones, teenagers get entertained by consuming short-form content through reels, TikToks, and shorts. This leads to kids reading fewer books for entertainment, which can harm important skills like grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. It also significantly reduces their life span.

All of these negative effects are one of the major reasons why Agoura High School has a “No Phone” policy. However, smartphones are not entirely negative. They can be useful tools for education, creativity, staying connected, and more. The key is to have a good balance. It’s highly recommended to set screen time requirements. Turning off notifications can also reduce distractions and allow someone to focus on themselves.

Ultimately, phone addiction and excessive usage are growing issues among teenagers in the United States. Although they are meant to offer many benefits, the power of smartphones has been abused. Excessive screen time can lead to serious long-term risks in many aspects of a person’s life. By making an effort to learn how to use technology responsibly, teens can enjoy the advantages of smartphones without causing detrimental effects to their health.
