Every twenty second of April, humanity celebrates our planet with a holiday that transcends all cultures, borders, and conflict. This Earth Day, Agoura High school challenged its students to construct a work of art inspired by the term “sustainability”. Our talented artists produced several intriguing, thought-provoking, and altogether gorgeous pieces.

What inspired you to join this art showcase?
“I honestly had nothing to do, I thought it would be something fun!”
What materials did you use to create your artwork, and what commentary does this offer?
“I use cardboard, plastic wrap, toys, trash, bottles, straws, etc. When we don’t use sustainability in our lives, sea creatures are taking harmful things into their systems.”
Is this your typical style, or are you trying something new?
“Trying something new!”

What inspired you to join this art showcase?
“I used to make art a lot but I started getting really busy this year and because of that I had stopped making art completely, when I saw the email for the art showcase I signed up immediately because it sounded like a great opportunity for me to start creating art again.”
What materials did you use to create your artwork?
“All the materials I used were stuff I already had at home. The base of the tree is made out of aluminum wire and all the charms and little trinkets on the tree are all stuff I had at home, there were things like dice, charms from old jewelry, crystals, plastic figures and many more.”
Is this your typical style, or are you trying something new?
“I love exploring different art styles and the tree I created was something completely new that I’d never done before. I’ve done sculpture pieces a few times before but all those times they had been made almost completely out of clay. The type of art I do the most is paintings, usually not of people, or doodles of characters I’ve created.”

What inspired you to join this art showcase?
I was inspired to join this art showcase for a few different reasons. I wanted to make an idea I had a reality, I love Earth Day, and I also just wanted to participate in a school event.
What materials did you use to create your artwork?
I used a ton of random household items to create this sculpture! For example, old recycled newspapers plus a glue/water/flour mixture created the paper mache base, tin foil on the inside helped build up the structure, and finally some acrylic paint coated the whole thing. I actually intentionally left the paint really see-through to showcase the recycled newspaper
Is this your typical style, or are you trying something new?
This was definitely way out of my comfort zone and not my usual style at all. My usual style is 2D; oil pastels, watercolors, and graphite on paper.
