AI Usage in Schools

In recent years, artificial intelligence has been a controversial topic. Everyone has heard “AI is going to take over the world!” at least once. But, how is it actually affecting students in school? Many teenagers, especially those in 6th-12th grade, use AI regularly. However, AI’s efficiency and convenience have often been abused, resulting in many schools discouraging its use. This article explores what other students and I think about using AI to assist with school.

In my opinion, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Gemini can be beneficial for certain tasks. Using AI can allow students to ask specific questions repeatedly until students fully understand a certain concept. AI can also be used to review for a test or to learn new topics. It can be a practical tool for helping students explore specific areas in depth to fully comprehend topics they may have missed during classes.

However, I don’t believe that students should use AI to replace hard work. Some students often rely on AI to do big assignments because they’re afraid they’ll earn a low score if they were to do it themselves, while others simply have a lack of motivation and are unwilling to put in effort. Although it may seem convenient at first, too much use of AI may create challenges for students in the future. Many AI websites are intended purely for studying purposes by testing students on their active recall. These websites create practice tests almost instantly, reassuring convenience and efficiency at the same time. Many AI websites are useful for studying and can be very beneficial.

Lastly, let’s explore other classmates’ insights and thoughts about using AI in school!

Anna Croutch:

What are your thoughts on artificial intelligence being incorporated into schoolwork?

“I think AI, when handled correctly, can be a valuable study tool. However, if the privilege of being allowed to use it is abused, teachers might be forced to ban it or set limits on what programs can be used.”

What do you think should be done if it’s overused?

“Students should be given another chance or two, and if the chances are used up, they should only be given access to district-approved AI sites with limits and guidelines set on them.

What do you think AI should strictly not be used for?

“Making ‘art’ and calling it real art. AI art does not have the same handcrafted quality and work put into it like human art.”

Teachers in our school use Securly to track our activities during class and make sure we don’t use AI inappropriately. How efficient has this been recently?

“I haven’t tried to go onto an AI site in a classroom that uses it securely, but I think teachers would just give them a warning. They don’t block in completely, so a lot of students still use it. “

Aarya Agashe:

Do you think excessive dependence on AI will make people struggle in the future?

“People might lose critical thinking skills, creativity, and social skills if not used responsibly. It’s important to have a balance.”

Do you think this can be stopped or prevented in the future?

“It’s already become a big part of our lives, so it would be hard to prevent it from growing. However, if teachers set rules and limits, it can help decrease it within our school.”

Claire Hennessey:

Do you think students should use AI for learning, or use videos and resources made by real people?”

“I think it’s better to use resources made by real people because they’re more experienced, and sometimes AI can be inaccurate and make up random things.”

Do you think we should encourage or discourage AI?

“Discourage, it wastes a lot of resources, and it will promote being disengaged in class because students know they can just use AI for assignments.”

Overall, AI can be a powerful tool that can help students succeed more; however, it’s important to ensure that it’s not overused.
